Parka

(among the Nentsy; porkhy among the Khanty and Mansi; porga among the Sel’kupy), the name of various local types of winter overgarments in northern Siberia, sewn for the most part from reindeer skins with the fur on the outside.

Along the lower reaches of the Ob’, among the Khanty and Mansi, a parka is a hooded pullover garment. It is a type of fur coat among the Khanty and Mansi on the lower and middle Ob’, among the Sel’kupy on the Taz and Turukhan rivers, in northern Krasnoiarsk Krai, and among the Dolgans, Evenki, and Yakuts in Yakutia. Some Evenki of eastern Siberia call their ordinary open caftans parki. In the 18th century, Russians on Kamchatka referred to the long fur shirts known as kukhlianki as parki.
