constitutional monarchySystem of government in which a monarch (see monarchy) shares power with a constitutionally organized government. The monarch may be the de facto head of state or a purely ceremonial leader. The constitution allocates the rest of the government's power to the legislature and judiciary. Britain became a constitutional monarchy under the Whigs; other constitutional monarchies include Belgium, Cambodia, Jordan, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Thailand. When Morocco won its freedom from France in March 1956 and from Spain one month later, the nationalist movement was united in its aim to achieve a democratic, parliamentary monarchy under the leadership of popular King Mohammed V, grandfather of the present ruler. Further, if we look at critical points in cultural development - Finland under Russian occupation, or Spain as the restoration of parliamentary monarchy produced a political background sound enough for the final impulse toward modernity - inward looking reference points were essential to ensure the preservation of the culture which was under threat of eradication. |
