partisan, partizan
1. an adherent or devotee of a cause, party, etc. 2. relating to or excessively devoted to one party, faction, etc.; one-sided Partisan a spear with a long flat tip attached to a shaft. The partisan was the weapon of the lansquenets in the 16th century and of the bodyguards of monarchs in the 17th century. The total length of the partisan together with the shaft was 2½ m or more. The shaft was painted or ornamented with velvet or silk. In Russia the partisan was an honorary weapon of field-grade and company-grade officers in the 18th century. It was not used in combat.
