A central connecting device in a network that joins wires from several stations in a star configuration. It does not provide any processing or regeneration of signals. Contrast with active hub and intelligent hub. See hub.

As digital transmission has excellent performance with high link budgets, no costly optical amplification is required, resulting in an optically passive hub.
Passive hubs split that power up among various devices and may not be able to provide enough power to run two, three or more USB peripherals.
