penetrant [′pen·ə·trənt] (invertebrate zoology) A large barbed nematocyst that pierces the body of the prey and injects a paralyzing agent. (materials) A liquid with low surface tension, usually containing a dye or fluorescent chemical; when flowed over a metal surface, it is used to determine the existence and extent of cracks and other discontinuities.
