Music any of several scales consisting of five notes, the most commonly encountered one being composed of the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth degrees of the major diatonic scale

Titles include "Waking Flowers," "Bubbles," "Dewdrops," "Dreamland" and a pentatonic "Whispering Butterflies.
Musically, the haunting melody is major pentatonic and suggests a bagpipe tune; indeed, it is frequently performed on bagpipes and has become associated with that instrument as a funeral dirge.
