Periarthritis
a disease characterized by a reactive inflammatory process in the periarticular tissues of the large joints (the joint’s capsule, ligaments, and surrounding tendons and muscles) that occurs as the joints age. Its causes include traumata of the joint, overstrain, chilling, and inflammatory diseases of other organs. Observed most often in middle and old age, periarthritis usually affects the shoulder joint—humeroscapular periarthritis —and is manifested by pain in the shoulder and limitation of motion owing to the pain. X-ray diagnosis plays an essential role in detecting the disease. The prognosis is favorable. Treatment includes temporary immobilization of the joint by application of a restricting bandage, thermotherapy, physiotherapy, injection of Novocain solution into the tissues surrounding the joint, treatment at a health resort, and, more rarely, X-ray therapy.
