perlèche [pər′lesh]
(medicine) An inflammatory condition occurring at the angles of the mouth with resultant fissuring. Perlèche fissures in the corners of the mouth. Certain microorganisms (streptococci, staphylococci, yeastlike fungi) and vitamin deficiency cause and prolong perlèche. Perlèche may also originate as an allergy, caused by taking certain drugs or by using plastic prostheses, toothpaste, or lipstick. A honey-colored or whitish crust often forms on the perleche, and the skin surrounding the lesion becomes red and edematous. Upon determining the precise cause treatment includes the use of antimicrobial and antifungal preparations, hormones (corticosteroids), vitamins, and ultraviolet irradiation.
