Pernambuco Wood

(Caesalpinia echinata), a tree of the family Caesalpiniaceae. The thorny trunk measures as much as 30 m in height. The leaves are bipinnate, and the flowers, which are small and fragrant, grow in racemes. The fruit is an elongate pod with thorns. Pernambuco wood, native to Brazil, grows wild and is also cultivated. The wood is yellowish red or dark red, with attractive markings, and is very heavy. It is used in shipbuilding and furniture-making. The wood also releases brazilin, a substance once used to make dyes in the varnish and paint industry.
