pharyngeal bursa [fə′rin·jē·əl ′bər·sə]
(embryology)
A small pit caudal to the pharyngeal tonsil, resulting from the ingrowth of epithelium along the course of the degenerating tip of the notochord of the vertebrate embryo.

4) In-growth of respiratory epithelium along this pathway creates a flat pharyngeal bursa in the area or, if the drainage pathway of the bursa becomes obstructed, a Tornwaldt's cyst.
Embryogenic cysts of the pharyngeal bursa and Rathke's pouch are usually located in the midline, and their histologic features are similar to those of branchial cysts, which are situated laterally in the nasopharynx.
