phase-contrast microscope [′fāz ¦kän‚trast ′mī·krə‚skōp]
(optics)
A compound microscope that has an annular diaphragm in the front focal plane of the substage condenser and a phase plate at the rear focal plane of the objective, to make visible differences in phase or optical path in transparent or reflecting media.
