photo printer

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.02 sec.

A printer specialized for smaller prints such as 4x6" and 5x7". When first introduced in the mid-1990s, photo printers used dye sublimation for high quality printing because inkjet printing was not quite up to par. Since then, inkjet technology has greatly improved, and most photo printers are inkjets. Epson, Canon and HP are major players in this market. See digital camera, photo scanner, inkjet printer and dye sublimation printer.

One of the First
FARGO's FotoFUN! was one of the first photo printers on the market. It was introduced in 1995 at a breakthrough price of $595 for a dye sublimation printer. (Image courtesy of FARGO Electronics, Inc.)

The CYCOLOR Printer
Introduced in the early 1990s, CYCOLOR was an amazing technology that never materialized. Like film, image transformation took place inside the CYCOLOR paper, which was sensitive to light (see CYCOLOR). (Image courtesy of Cycolor, Inc.).
