Now, a team of industrial researchers has taken what may be a crucial step toward such photonic circuitry: They've found a way to dial down the speed of light within microchip components. Building on its leadership in delivering next generation optical networking technology, Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) today introduced the Common Photonic Layer, a new DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) optical transport platform that is designed to transform and converge networks across service provider, enterprise and cable MSO (multiservice operators) markets. Novel polymer materials with structure on the scale of the wavelength of light, such as high-molecular-weight block co-polymers (BCs), have been noted for their potential use in photonic devices. |
