Photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity have been around for decades, yet their commercial use has been largely limited to applications where conventional electric power is difficult or impossible to provide, such as lighting of road signs and offshore buoys.
SatCon Technology Corporation (Nasdaq NM: SATC), a developer and manufacturer of electronic power control systems, today announced that it received a $1 million contract award from the United States Department of Energy, acting through the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, for the development of advanced inverter technology for residential and light commercial photovoltaic and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) applications.
In indoor flights conducted last month at a NASA center in Alabama, the plane with a 5-foot wingspan flew with the laser beam energizing photovoltaic cells to power a tiny electric motor that turned its lone propeller.
