photovoltaic cellA semiconductor diode that converts light into DC voltage. Also known as "solar cells," photovoltaic cells are used in a myriad of applications from simple light sensors to complete energy creation systems. See photovoltaic. photovoltaic cell [¦fōd·ō·vōl′tā·ik ‚sel] (electronics) A device that detects or measures electromagnetic radiation by generating a potential at a junction (barrier layer) between two types of material, upon absorption of radiant energy. Also known as barrier-layer cell; barrier-layer photocell; boundary-layer photocell; photronic photocell. How to thank TFD for its existence? Photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity have been around for decades, yet their commercial use has been largely limited to applications where conventional electric power is difficult or impossible to provide, such as lighting of road signs and offshore buoys. The latest solar technology uses integrated photovoltaic cells, which is what the Transit Authority wanted for its new structure. In indoor flights conducted last month at a NASA center in Alabama, the plane with a 5-foot wingspan flew with the laser beam energizing photovoltaic cells to power a tiny electric motor that turned its lone propeller. |
