In programming, a pattern that describes the type of data allowed in a field or the way the data should be printed. The pattern is made up of a character code for each character in the field; for example, 9999 is a picture for four numeric digits. A picture for a telephone number could be (999) 999-9999. Three alphanumerics followed by three numeric digits might be XXX999. Pictures are similar, but not identical, in all programming languages. See also graphics and graphics formats.

Exemplary endnotes demonstrate to the high school reader why Aronson chose to tell the story as he did and where he found his information; careful captions include the illustrations' provenance and, usually, their date, and remind readers that pictorial matter can be fiction, too. By contrast, "Manet at the Prado," a separate exhibition that opened toward the end of 2003 and closed early in 2004 with Madrid as its only (and indeed, given its nature, its only possible) venue, was designed to give pictorial matters free rein to see what they would yield. |
