(metallurgy) A low-temperature furnace in which steel is tempered. Pit Furnace a compartment furnace used in machine building for the heat treatment of large metal items. Pit furnaces may be round, square, or rectangular and are covered by a detachable, expanding, or movable roof. Loading and unloading operations are performed by means of a bridge crane.
