(geophysics) A thick layer of plasma just inside the magnetopause characterized by a tailward bulk flow with a speed of 60 to 120 miles (100 to 200 kilometers) per second and by a gradual decrease of density, temperature, and speed as the depth inside the magnetosphere increases.
