plasmidGenetic element not contained within a chromosome. It occurs in many bacterial strains. Plasmids are circular DNA molecules that replicate independently of the bacterial chromosome. They are not essential for the bacterium but may give it a selective advantage. Some plasmids determine the production of proteins that can kill other bacteria; others make bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Plasmids are extremely valuable tools in the fields of molecular biology and genetics, specifically in the area of genetic engineering. |

Most food poisoning strains studied to date carry cpe in their chromosomes; isolates from AAD and SD cases bear cpe in a plasmid (10,11). Allovectin-7 (A-7), which consists of a DNA plasmid, can induce tumor immunity, suppressing the growth of cancer. After designing and administering a chemical that halts plasmid replication, the researchers found that each Escherichia coli bacterium had only a single copy of the resistance-carrying plasmid to pass on. |
