one of the strands twisted together to make rope, yarn, etc.

ply [plī]
(materials)
A thin sheet of wood or other material bonded to one or more additional thin sheets, as in plywood.
(textiles)
A strand of yarn made by twisting together two or more strands.

(mathematics, data)ply - 1. Of a node in a tree, the number of branches between that node and the root.

2. Of a tree, the maximum ply of any of its nodes.
