point source [′pȯint ‚sȯrs]
(civil engineering)
A municipal or industrial wastewater discharge through a discrete pipe or channel.
(physics)
A source of radiation having definite position but no extension in space; this is an ideal which is a good approximation for distances from the source sufficiently large compared to the dimensions of the source.

point source
A light source whose dimensions are insignificant compared with the distance at which it is used; e.g., a fluorescent lamp is a point source when viewed from a large distance but a line source when viewed close to the source.

In Pennsylvania a point source (a source that has a defined discharge such as a municipal wastewater treatment facility) may trade with either other point sources or nonpoint sources (a source that does not have a defined discharge such as a farm field discharge).
The GLI established water quality criteria to be used by states to establish pollutant discharge limits for some BCCs and other pollutants that are discharged by point sources.
