polycystic ovarian syndrome [‚päl·ē‚sis·tik ō‚ver·ē·ən ′sin‚drōm]
(medicine)
A disorder in which the ovaries are bilaterally enlarged with multiple follicular cysts due to abnormal regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Symptoms include amenorrhea, menstrual abnormalities, infertility, and hirsutism.
