polysilicon (POLYcrystalline SILICON) Silicon with many single-crystal regions of different sizes and orientations. It is used as the gate in MOS transistors as well as an interconnect between them. It is also used to "grow" a monocrystalline (single-crystal) ingot that is sliced into wafers for chip manufacturing (see crystalline silicon for details).
