Porus

(Greek; in Hindi, probably Parvataka). King of an ancient Indian state in central Punjab. In the battle of the Hydaspes (Jhelum River) in 326 B.C., Porus, at the head of a great army that included many war elephants, offered strong resistance to a Greco-Macedonian invasion. However, outmaneuvered and defeated by Alexander the Great, he was wounded and taken captive. Alexander returned Porus’ domains to him and made him a vassal ruler, under the supervision of a Greek vicegerent, Eudamus. In 317 B.C., Porus was apparently murdered by Eudamus.
