powder method [′pau̇d·ər ‚meth·əd] (solid-state physics) A method of x-ray diffraction analysis in which a collimated, monochromatic beam of x-rays is directed at a sample consisting of an enormous number of tiny crystals having random orientation, producing a diffraction pattern that is recorded on film or with a counter tube.
