power adapter

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.

An external power supply for laptop computers and just about every portable or semi-portable electronic device on the market. Also called an "AC adapter," it contains a rectifier to convert AC current to DC and a transformer to convert voltage from 120 down to 9, 12, 15 or whatever is required. If a power adapter is not used with an electronic device, the power supply that creates the DC current is inside the unit. See transformer and power supply.

Adapters Need Room
The ubiquitous black power adapter may be a small box, but compared to an AC plug, its extra bulk makes it hard to plug in at times. Today, many power strips add extra space around their sockets (the bottom two in this image) in order to accommodate them.
