powerchip

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.06 sec.

powerchip

A semiconductor-based, high-speed switching device for electrical power. Such products, which open and close at nanosecond speeds, are expected to be widely used to distribute clean, uniform power for computers and electronics.

From Power Grids to Motherboards
Instead of using electromechanical switches, huge powerchips can be used to switch electrical feeds in the national power grid. Medium-sized powerchips can switch a building from grid power to backup batteries, while small powerchips switch at the circuit board level in power supplies and UPS systems.
