Theophilus (Presbyter)pseudonym of Roger of Helmarshausen(flourished 12th century) German monk and writer. He is known for his De Diversis Artibus (c. 1110–40), a thorough account of the techniques of almost all the known crafts of the early 12th century. From his writings it can be deduced that he was a practicing craftsman of the Benedictine order. presbyter 1. a. an elder of a congregation in the early Christian Church b. A church of Christ, according to the Gospel, is a congregation of faithful persons, called out of the world by divine grace, who mutually agree to live together, and execute gospel discipline among them; which government, is not national, parochial, or presbyterial, but congregational" (108). The earliest courts in the Bible were formed in the presbyterial system of justice wherein the elders or heads of families formed the court that sat in the City Gate (Exodus 18 et passim). The introduction of parish councils, presbyterial conferences, episcopal synods, and other innovative measures in the wake of Vatican II were designed to increase participation in church governance at all levels. |
