pressure-relief device [′presh·ər ri‚lēf di‚vīs]
(mechanical engineering) In pressure vessels, a device designed to open in a controlled manner to prevent the internal pressure of a component or system from increasing beyond a specified value, that is, a safety valve. A spring-loaded machine part which will yield, or deflect, when a predetermined force is exceeded. pressure-relief device A disk which is designed to open or a device which is designed to rupture automatically in order to relieve pressure within a system.
