| In some individuals, ovaries contained only oogonia, but in other females at a more advanced stage of development and with larger ovaries, both oogonia and primary oocytes in the perinucleolar stage were present. Gonadal intersex was characterized by many primary oocytes distributed throughout normal testicular tissue (Figure 1). Females were scored as follows: 1 if only primary oocytes were present; 2 if primary oocytes and early yolk vesicle stage oocytes were present; 3 if primary oocytes, early yolk vesicle oocytes, and approximately 50% late yolk vesicle oocytes were present; or 4 if mostly late yolk vesicle oocytes and vitellogenic oocytes were present. |
