| Whereas the human genome comprises approximately 30,000 genes, there are likely over 100,000 unique proteins in the human proteome due to the multiple ways each gene can be transcribed and translated into proteins by cellular machinery. The first 12 journals in the new initiative include Annals of General Hospital Psychiatry, Cancer Cell International, Cardiovascular Diabetology, Directed Evolution, Filarial Infections, International Journal of Equity in Health, Kineto-plastid Biology & Disease, The Malaria Journal, Microbial Cell Factories, Natural Negatives, The Nutrition Journal and Proteome Science. The size of GeneProt's facility, which opened in April 2001, and its massively parallel high-throughput design has drastically cut the time needed to extensively analyze and compare the small and large proteins of a disease proteome and a control proteome to about six months. |
