prothrombinCarbohydrate-protein compound in plasma essential to coagulation. In response to bleeding, a complex series of clotting-factor interactions leads to its conversion by thromboplastin to thrombin, which transforms fibrinogen in plasma into fibrin. Fibrin and platelets combine to form a clot. Hemophilia is caused by a hereditary lack of one of the clotting factors. Vitamin K is needed to synthesize prothrombin, so conditions that impair the vitamin's absorption result in prothrombin deficiency and a tendency to prolonged bleeding. |

It should be monitored by screening prothrombin, partial prothrombin levels, platelets and fibrinogen (Meister et al 2002). In addition, all patients were screened by several laboratory tests, including measurement of the complete blood count (CBC), including platelet count; prothrombin time (PT) to evaluate the extrinsic coagulation pathway (factor II, V, VII, and X activity), which were converted to calculate the International Normalized Ratio (INR) (7); and activated partial thromboplastin rime (aPTT) to evaluate the intrinsic coagulation pathway (factor VIII, IX, XI, and XII activity). They concluded that hemorrhage, as a cause of death, is a result of thrombocytopenia and prolonged prothrombin times. |
