Pyrrolidine
tetrahydropyrrole, a heterocyclic compound; a colorless liquid with an ammoniac odor. Boiling point, 87°–88°C; density, 0.8576 g/cm3 at 20°C. It fumes in air and dissolves freely in water. Pyrrolidine is a strong base; it is oxidized to γ-aminobutyric acid by chromic acid.
Pyrrolidine is prepared commercially by hydrogenation of pyrrole or succinimide. The pyrrolidine ring forms a structural molecular fragment of many biologically active substances, including proline, nicotine, cocaine, and certain other alkaloids. Pyrrolidine is used in fine organic synthesis. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
