Quartered

Lumber that is sawn from a log at a perpendicular angle to the growth rings; the lumber sawn in this manner is easier to dry without warping and shrinking; used for flooring and weatherboards.

quartersawn, rift-sawn

Descriptive of lumber sawn so that the growth rings intersect the wide face at an angle of 45° or greater. Also See edge-grained. (See illustration p. 784.)
