quipus or khipus (kē`p z), groups of strings, knotted for tally, which were used by the Inca for keeping records and sending messages. The quipu was based on the decimal system. Small cords with knots in them were attached to a main cord or a top band; the color of the cord, its place, its size, and the knots in it were all of significance to the record or the message. The quipus had to be made up and deciphered by specially trained officials. The method of deciphering is not known today, although Andean shepherds still use a sort of quipu. How to thank TFD for its existence? The researchers--and many scholars pondering their report--believe the colorful knotted quipu strings found at a 13th century archaeological site near Lima, Peru, formed an early abacus system the Incas used to track the units of labor and time upon which taxes were based. The Spaniards, who wanted one grand narrative of empire written down for posterity, downgraded the history of the Andeans because it was not written, and then simply ignored, or tried to fit into oral history, all other kinds of Andean social memory such as the quipu, drinking, singing, dancing, and the rites performed at shrines.
