radial-ply (of a motor tyre) having the fabric cords in the outer casing running radially to enable the sidewalls to be flexible radial-ply [′rād·ē·əl ¦plī] (design engineering) Pertaining to the construction of a tire in which the cords run straight across the tire, and an additional layered belt of fabric is placed around the circumference between the plies and the tread. Because they have more flex in the sidewall than their bias-ply counterparts, radial-ply tires can increase traction and reduce slip. A cross-ply green tire is cylindrical in shape and a radial-ply tire has a pre-cambered form. The use of radial-ply tires instead of bias-ply tires seems to help somewhat. |
