When another deposit was found in Death Valley in 1881, he pioneered transport of the ore by ``Twenty Mule Teams'' from mine to the railhead in Mojave - then a 10-day trip over 165 miles of chaparral-laden desert. Hearst is a major railhead, highway and pipeline junction, a factor that played heavily into MEMS site selection. The rail yard, which operated from the 1850's until the early 1970's, was known as the "Lifeline of the City" because much of New York's milk, grain and vegetables were shipped to the yard's piers by barge from the railheads in New Jersey or by rail from the north. |
