A hydraulic-, pneumatic-, or spring-type shock absorber that decreases the energy of the recoil gradually and so avoids violent movement of the gun.

Disassemble the M2 and remove the back plate, barrel, barrel extension, buffer recoil mechanism, bolt and drive rod spring.
The XM 360's features include: a gun mount with a modular recoil mechanism, an electrically actuated multi-lug breech, a cannon tube with integral pepperpot muzzle brake to reduce recoil forces, a blast deflector to reduce the overpressure directed back toward the vehicle and a gun tube shroud to mitigate the effects of environmental conditions.
The barrel section were made by British companies while the breech blocks and recoil mechanisms were manufactured by Italian and Swiss firms.
