GPX4 is a component of the glutathione redox system that protects cells against oxidative damage induced by arsenic (Chouchane and Snow 2001; Lee and Ho 1994).
Schistosomes appear to be the first example of an organism with a redox system based exclusively on thioredoxin-glutathione reductase.
Additional findings showed that these redox systems were not classically reversible (data not presented).
