a factory for the purification of some crude material, such as ore, sugar, oil, etc.

refinery [ri′fīn·rē]
(chemical engineering)
System of process units used to convert crude petroleum into fuels, lubricants, and other petroleum-derived products.
(metallurgy)
System of process units used to convert nonferrous-metal ores into pure metals, such as copper or zinc.

outages at 14 different crude oil refineries in the past month have caused gas prices to skyrocket.
Though the California Energy Commission says the state's oil refineries are running at full production, putting out more than a million barrels each day, coming weeks could be difficult.
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a New York-based not-for-profit group that pushes ecological awareness, recently released the results of a study on refineries in the United States and how much they pollute.
