reflex camera
a camera in which the image is composed and focused on a large ground-glass viewfinder screen. In a single-lens reflex the light enters through the camera lens and falls on the film when the viewfinder mirror is retracted. In a twin-lens reflex the light enters through a separate lens and is deflected onto the viewfinder screen reflex camera [′rē‚fleks ‚kam·rə] (optics) A camera in which a mirror is used to reflect a full-size image of a scene on a ground glass so that the composition and focus may be judged. Reflex Camera a camera equipped with a mirror viewfinder, which may be located outside the camera chamber and have its own lens (for example, the Liubitel’, Neva, and Rolleiflex cameras) or may be installed directly in the camera chamber, with sighting through the main lens (for example, the Zenit, Saliut, Kiev-10, Exacta, and Practica cameras). The viewfinders of modern reflex cameras are equipped with auxiliary wedge-shaped focusing units for rapid and precise adjustment of the lens for sharpness. In a reflex camera with the viewfinder inside the camera chamber, the observed image coincides with the image formed on the film, since both are created by the same lens. This feature of the reflex camera allows the photographer to frame the picture precisely, to adjust the depth of the image space for the object to be photo-graphed, and to measure the illumination of the object. Reflex cameras are especially well suited for operation with inter-changeable lenses, since the mirror viewfinder eliminates the necessity of correcting the framing and the focusing of the camera after changing lenses.
