The soils of Lahemaa and Vilsandi Island nature preserves may be classified respectively as Calcaric Cambisols, whose topsoil textures are composed of calcareous sandy loam, and Hyperskeletic-Endolithic Regosols, where the topsoil consists of coarse carbonate sediments.
For example, a Chernozem with a brown Ah horizon suggests a dry climate having a grassland cover, whereas Ah horizons found in Regosols in young sand dune deposits indicate rapid burial and a dry climate.
Gelic Regosol must have formed prior to its possible evolution into automorphic Calcaric Regosol under pine (described by rich pollen) and further into Gleyic Regosol and Gleysol under the increasing influence of gleying in the transition from the Younger Dryas to the Pre-Boreal.
