(atomic physics)
The emission of radiation by a gas or vapor as a result of excitation of atoms to higher energy levels by incident photons at the resonance frequency of the gas or vapor; the radiation is characteristic of the particular gas or vapor atom but is not necessarily the same frequency as the absorbed radiation. Also known as resonance fluorescence; resonance luminescence.
