rhizoid [′rī‚zȯid]

(botany)

A rootlike structure which helps to hold the plant to a substrate; found on fungi, liverworts, lichens, mosses, and ferns.

Rhizoid

one of the unicellular or multicellular filaments arranged in a row in mosses, lichens, and some algae and fungi (for example, Rhizopus). Rhizoids serve for attachment to a substrate, from which they absorb water and extract nutrients. The filaments resemble root hairs. In marchantiaceous mosses there are special rhizoids consisting of dead cells along which water moves by means of wick action.
