river tide

    0.01 sec.
river tide [′rivĀ·ər ‚tīd]
(hydrology)
A tide that occurs in rivers emptying directly into the sea, showing three characteristic modifications of ocean tides: the speed at which the tide travels upstream depends on the depth of the channel, the further upstream the longer the duration of the falling tide and shorter the duration of the rising tide, and the range of the tide decreases with distance upstream.
