roll film [′rōl ‚film] (graphic arts) A long strip of plastic material with a sensitive emulsion on one side and a layer of gelatin on the other; the gelatin layer reduces the tendency of the base material to curl; the film is attached to opaque backing paper that protects the film from light before and after it is exposed in the camera.
