roller bearing

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.01 sec.

roller bearing

One of the two types of rolling, or antifriction, bearings, the other being the ball bearing. Like a ball bearing, a roller bearing has two grooved tracks, but the balls are replaced by rollers. The rollers may be cylinders or shortened cones. If the rollers are cylindrical, only radial loads (perpendicular to the axis of rotation) can be carried, but with conical rollers both radial and thrust, or axial, loads (parallel to the axis of rotation) can be carried. In a given space, a roller bearing can carry a greater radial load than a ball bearing can.

roller bearing [′rō·lər ‚ber·iŋ]
(mechanical engineering)
A shaft bearing characterized by parallel or tapered steel rollers confined between outer and inner rings.

Summary: The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) today announced it has signed an agreement to sell the assets of its Needle Roller Bearings business, which primarily serves customers in the automotive original-equipment sector, to Japan's JTEKT Corporation in a cash transaction.
Roller bearings on the moving platen reportedly reduce friction up to 80% versus a sliding-support design.
Their design is less sensitive to misalignment than traditional roller bearings and contributes to longer service life, higher reliability, and quieter performance, according to the manufacturer.
