(1) The top level group in an organization structure.

(2) The starting point of the top level domain structure on the Internet. It is the root, or entry point, to the .com, .org, .net, etc. domains. See subdomain and Internet domain name.

In this method, all you are doing is creating a subdirectory of the root domain, and all new domains will be then set up to actually point to that particular subdirectory.
A list of all the root domain name servers is sent back in response.
In Asia, spammers attempted to capitalize on the China earthquake and the Burma cyclone disasters, claiming to help in distributing funds to victims, or even going as far as hijacking a legitimate website by creating a fraudulent URL under the root domain, which attempted to misdirect donations.
