(Pistacia lentiscus), a low dioecious evergreen tree or shrub of the family Anacardiaceae. The leaves are evenpinnate with winged rachides. The small flowers are in dense racemose inflorescences. The fruits are small, obovate drupes measuring 4-5 mm in diameter. The mastic tree grows wild in maquis in the Mediterranean region, on dry rocky slopes. When tapped, the trunk exudes the aromatic resin mastic. The fruits yield oil, which is used in food and industrially; the leaves contain tannic substances and yellow dye. In the USSR, mastic trees are occasionally cultivated as ornamentals in the Caucasus and the southern Crimea.
