The formation of red, yellow, or brown iron oxide minerals by oxidation of mineral deposits.

The formation of rust on ferrous metals and alloys.

Rusting 

a specific type of metal corrosion. The oxidation of iron upon exposure to atmospheric oxygen, moisture, and carbon dioxide results in the formation of a layer of rust, composed chiefly of hydrous iron oxide, on the surface of the metal.
